Greater Texas Services announces scholarships to support students at Texas HBCUs
St. Philip’s College is pleased to announce the receipt of an award of $200,000 in scholarships from Greater Texas Services. The scholarship funds will support student retention and graduation and are part of $1.5 million in grants to nine Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across Texas. Eligible students can use the scholarships for tuition, fees, housing, and other educational expenses. St. Philip’s College will have access to $200,000 over four years.
“HBCUs play an important role in serving the students of Texas,” said GTS President Dr. Terry Jones. “Greater Texas Services wants to help these schools achieve their educational mission by investing critical funding for student scholarships.”
Nine Texas HBCUs are eligible for scholarships as part of this funding, including:
St. Philip’s College (San Antonio)
Prairie View A&M University
Texas Southern University (Houston)
Huston-Tillotson University (Austin)
Jarvis Christian College (Hawkins)
Paul Quinn College (Dallas)
Southwestern Christian College (Terrell)
Texas College (Tyler)
Wiley College (Marshall)
“Our students’ needs are not just one dimensional; they are not simply focused on the cost of tuition,” said Dr. Adena Williams Loston, President of St. Philip’s College. “We must address the multiplicity of need – child care, housing, textbooks, utilities and transportation. The foresight of Greater Texas Services in understanding this dynamic has exponential impact on student persistence and graduation.”
