Student named 2022 White House HBCU Scholar

The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) announced Brittney Carson as the St. Philip’s College 2022-2023 HBCU Competitiveness Scholar. The initiative recognizes outstanding student leaders and empowers scholars with tools for excellence and competitiveness. Students are nominated and endorsed by their institution’s administrators.
During the one-year term, Brittney will engage in local and national opportunities that ignite new passions and explore ideas critical to lifelong growth and development. In addition, she will participate in monthly web chats that support a wide range of topics, including the spirit of engagement and entrepreneurship, broad-based innovation, and career development.
Brittney is currently pursuing an Associate of Arts in Teaching. She is a member of Collegiate 100, Tiger Cheer Squad, and the National Society of Leadership and Success. In addition to being a student leader, Brittney serves as a work-study in the Office of the Vice President of Student Success.
Brittney hopes to use the platform to increase awareness of SPC’s HBCU designation. “I hope to share the (college) history with the community at large about our designation as an HBCU. I want to meet alumni and hear their stories, and share that information with current students,” said Brittney.
