Some people have a gift. They can relate well with people on a one-to-one basis. They have a knack for motivating others and helping them become the best they can be.

Soon they will be able to take classes to work on these attributes and get a certificate to be a life coach. Ultimately, they can become entrepreneurs and use their skills to make a living.

Starting in the fall of 2025, SAC’s social work program will offer a Level 1 certificate to become a life coach.

“A life coaching career is ideal for students who are passionate about helping others grow, overcome challenges, and achieve their goals,” said Dr. Denetria Brooks-James, coordinator for the social work program.

A life coach is a professional who helps individuals set and achieve personal or professional goals, overcome obstacles, and improve their overall well-being.

Unlike therapists who focus on past traumas and mental health issues, life coaches focus on the present and future, offering guidance, motivation, and strategies for success.

According to Brooks-James, the life coaching curriculum will cover a range of skills and techniques to prepare students for coaching individuals effectively. Students who complete the certificate will be able work in several areas, including:

  • Personal and life coaching
  • Career coaching
  • Executive and leadership coaching
  • Health and wellness coaching
  • Relationship and dating coaching
  • Financial coaching
  • Spiritual and purpose coaching

While many coaches run their own businesses, some companies hire them for leadership and employee development. Life coaches also offer services online with video calls. They may also include group programs.

The certification will take one calendar year to complete and will be offered in eight-week terms. It will include both in person and online classes.
