What is the Visual Arts program?The visual arts have been a marker for various cultures since before recorded time, and the many approaches to creating art today are greater than at any time in history. Launched in 1955, San Antonio College’s visual arts program includes specialized studios, a large gallery exhibition space, and a large lecture hall. The studios include specific equipment to pursue a wide range of studio disciplines such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, darkroom photography, digital media, drawing, and design. What will I learn?The program allows students to explore the visual arts by recognizing historical and contemporary works and the impact of major artists and art movements. For majors, students will demonstrate their ability to make workable connections between concepts and media, and they will develop skills in visual expression and communication in one or more media. Students engage in hands-on creative work to develop their artistic talents, aesthetic sensibility, and visual literacy in their area of interest. They also learn about the power that art can convey through representation, metaphor, symbol, abstraction, or other methods that broaden the opportunity for interpretation of their artwork by viewers. |
What can I do with this course of study?The program prepares students for transfer to a four-year university to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Graduates can also pursue an individual studio practice or seek entry-level jobs in art galleries. Depending on the student’s area of concentration, there are also opportunities to set up a studio focused on painting, sculpture, printmaking, darkroom photography, digital media, drawing, or design. What's special about our program?The broad range of technique and skill exploration in the visual arts program classes include classical to contemporary. The gallery exhibits local, national, and international professional artists and student work. Visiting lecture events expose students to nationally and internationally recognized artists, art critics, and art historians. |
