What do you wish students knew about the writing process? |
The writing process never ends, but practice really does make perfect. Great writers work hard to write well and practice to keep their skills improving—if they can do it, you can too. |
Years tutoring at NVC:
I've been a tutor at NVC for two years.
Favorite drink & snack:
I’ve eaten a large portion of guacamole and salsa with pita chips for dinner every night for the past four years. I don’t know why humanity hasn’t been able to compete with the cuisine yet, but fortunately, my diet hasn’t been made into a documentary like Super Size Me yet. It's spin on the French diet in which I have a large portion at a lunch time in the evening instead of a large dinner at night, and it is a result of my favorite drink being a strong, early morning coffee with pumpkin spice creamer to accompany a small, non-sugared breakfast.
Favorite punctuation mark:
My favorite punctuation mark is the exclamation point because using it feels like pulling out the blue suede shoes that you know are overrated but that are otherwise just collecting dust in the back of the closet.
Favorite literary genre:
My favorite literary genre is satire: Aristophanes, Oscar Wilde, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Václav Havel.
Three words that describe my tutoring style:
My tutoring style may be described as open-minded, rational, and creative.
Song that represents my writing journey:
How can I pick one? It’s a three way tie between Superman by Lazlo Bane, Get Me Away From Here, I’m Dying by Belle and Sebastian, and Almost There from the soundtrack for The Princess And The Frog.
What is one book that every student should read?
Wow. What a question. While it’s not my favorite book, I think the world would be a better place if every student read The Community Of Those Who Have Nothing In Common by Alphonso Lingis.
Something that I wish students knew about the writing process:
Sometimes, the writer has to write for themselves by taking the time to put as much ink on the page as they will in order to inform themselves of some ways to express the thoughts that they may eventually share with other writers. But other times, a writer has to put the audience first by organizing their ideas so that every word counts and has a point.
