Talia Christian, one of 8 students from across the country, to participate in prestigious leadership opportunity
Northeast Lakeview College is proud to announce that student, Talia Christian, is one of eight students selected to participate in (Achieving the Dream) ATD’s 2022 DREAM Student Scholars program which provides tailored leadership development and networking opportunities. Each Scholar will present at DREAM 2022, lending their voice and perspective to an audience of higher education leaders, practitioners, and advocates. Students in the program engage in experiential learning opportunities for community college students designed to enhance leadership, critical thinking, and networking skills.
“Talia is a student leader, advocate, and an excellent all-around individual,” says Dr. Veronica Garcia, NLC President. “I know she will make a positive impact in the program and at the DREAM 2022 Conference.”
"As someone who has had to overcome a lot throughout my educational journey, it means so much to see the fruit of my labor before me. This opportunity landed in my lap unexpectedly when Dr. Garcia recommended I apply, “ says Talia Christian, NLC student. “I think the most unexpected opportunities often end up being just right for you. I am so grateful for all the support I have from faculty, staff, and students here at Northeast Lakeview College. My experience at this community college has been life-changing in the most positive way. As a DREAM Scholar, I have been selected along with 7 other incredible students across the nation to speak at the 2022 DREAM Conference. As a young girl, I always knew I would impact our education system in my own unique way. I feel honored to be selected to share my wisdom and experience with education reformers across the country at such a young age. My hope is that my story will inspire others to make a change in their own community. I look forward to the friendships, leadership development, and personal development this program will provide me. "
Christian is studying psychology on a pre-med track. She hopes to earn her associate of arts and graduate from Northeast Lakeview College in May 2022. Her next steps are to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with an ultimate goal to obtain an MD in Psychiatry. Highly involved at NLC, she is a Student Ambassador in the Office of the President, Founder & President of the NLC Black Student Union, Alamo Colleges District Student Trustee Alternate, and a member of numerous student organizations and leadership groups.

About the DREAM Scholars:
The DREAM Student Scholars program is an experiential learning opportunity for community college students designed to enhance leadership, critical thinking, and networking skills. In addition to the scholars’ learning experience, the program integrates dynamic student voices into Achieving the Dream’s annual DREAM conference. The program is funded by private gifts from ATD Network members, ATD employees, coaches, Board members, and partners and friends of ATD. This year, Achieving the Dream matched donations given to the DREAM Scholars fund using the financial gift the organization received from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott in June 2021.
