In our newest episode of A Seat at the Table, Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores explores the vital work of the First Responders Academy at San Antonio College. This program trains more than 500 graduates annually for careers in law enforcement, fire science, correctional science, and emergency medical services. He is joined by Chief Manual Casarez of the Boerne Fire Department, Chief of the Balcones Height Police Department, John Jahanara, and First Responders Academy cadet Zaida Huerta.

How the collaborative environment at SAC Academy prepares and encourages students to pursue fulfilling lifelong careers.

Casarez: “I love the fact that we get to instill our experience into our cadets; And you have experienced firefighters, and law enforcement officers, that are out there dedicating themselves to making sure that the cadets are going to graduate and become great first responders.”

 

Insight into the experience of a current SAC Academy first responder cadet.

Huerta: “I’m really enjoying my time at the academy. It does change you, but it molds you into a better person. Not just that but it will make you a good police officer. Having great leadership skills.”

Balcones Heights Chief of Police, John Jahanara, gives his advice to future cadets.

Jahanara: “Treat everybody with respect along with maintaining your integrity. Never lose sight of the humanity in the job… Take care of yourself…Take care of your partners and your partners will take care of you as well.”
