Harrison and Brittany Barnes donate $250,000 to AlamoPROMISE
February 18, 2025
San Antonio Spurs forward Harrison Barnes alongside his wife, Brittany Barnes, have donated $250,000 to the AlamoPROMISE tuition-free program, benefiting students at St. Philip’s College, a Historically Black College and University and Hispanic-Serving Institution within the Alamo Colleges District.
The contribution, made in honor of Black History Month, will help eliminate financial barriers and expand educational opportunities for students pursuing their academic and career goals.
The check presentation took place on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2025, at a press event attended by St. Philip’s College students, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, and Alamo Colleges District representatives, including St. Philip's College President, Dr. Adena Williams Loston, and Alamo Colleges District Chancellor, Dr. Mike Flores.
AlamoPROMISE offers graduating seniors in Bexar County the opportunity to pursue higher education without the financial burden. This "last-dollar" scholarship covers tuition and required fees after financial aid awards are applied for up to three years or until the completion of an associate degree or academic certificate, whichever comes first. Now in its fifth year, the program has enrolled over 23,000 students.
“Harrison and Brittany Barnes’ generous investment in AlamoPROMISE is not just a gift – it’s a catalyst for change,” said Dr. Mike Flores, Alamo College District Chancellor. “Their support will open doors for students at St. Philip’s College, ensuring that financial barriers do not stand in the way of educational and career success.”
St. Philip’s College President, Dr. Adena Williams Loston, said the contribution will create life-changing student opportunities.
“This remarkable gift from Harrison and Brittany Barnes will empower our students at St. Philip’s College to dream bigger, achieve more, and transform lives,” said Dr. Adena Williams Loston, St. Philip’s College President. “We know that education changes the trajectory of one’s lived experiences, fulfills aspirational goals, and ensures economic viability. We are immensely grateful for Harrison and Brittany’s generosity.”
A 13-year NBA veteran, Barnes played for the Warriors, Mavericks and Kings before joining the Spurs in July of 2024. Barnes captured an NBA Championship in 2015, while playing for Golden State, and won a gold medal as a member of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team. Barnes has been recognized throughout his career for his consistent scoring, defensive versatility, and leadership on and off the court.
He and his wife, Brittany Barnes, say they were drawn to give to AlamoPROMISE because they believe in the power of education and the importance of providing equitable opportunities for all students to achieve their goals.
"Throughout my career I've had the privilege of experiencing the power of community and support. Now, as part of the San Antonio community, we are honored to give back and help invest in the future of this incredible city. Partnering with AlamoPROMISE and St. Philip’s College is my way of ensuring that young people here have the resources and opportunities to succeed,” said Barnes. “It’s about creating lasting change, building bridges, and supporting the next generation of leaders. My wife and I are both deeply committed to being advocates for this community, and together, we’re excited to make a meaningful impact and help open doors for local college students to chase their dreams."
